RwandaSEC is in the first stages of building a co-op of dairy farmers to produce pasteurized dairy products for local sale. Pasteurized products are rare, and RwandaSEC has an agreement with a grocery store in Rwanda to sell the products created by participants.
Our model is to create a private dairy processing business that will serve as the endowment for the non-profit work. Cow associations will sell their milk to our dairy processing business if they meet certain criteria - which we will provide the training on. This way we improve the productivity of the local herds and consequently those that own the herds. We test all milk and it must meet certain standards. The employees of the dairy processing business will be RwandaSEC employees as RwandaSEC is the major shareholder of the private business - this is a newish model for development projects. We are thinking sustainability, local rural development, and capacity building. We have tested the market and it is there to be developed. It is just a matter of us getting the seed money to set up the plant and get the product out. This is a pivotal part of our activities so we must promote it as a novel and workable solution to long-term funding strategies.
